“Eyes of the Street” Showcases the Talents of Brazilian Afrofuturist Muralist Enivo at the Consulate General of Brazil in New York

Image
Born in 1986 in São Paulo, the hugely beloved Brazilian artist Enivo began getting up on his native city’s streets at age 12. His artwork has, since, surfaced on walls, in festivals and in galleries worldwide.  It has been presented, too, in such prestigious institutions as Museu de Arte Sacra de São Paulo and National Museum of Brasilia. As an art educator, Enivo has inspired and trained hundreds of young people from “underprivileged neighborhoods.” And, together with a group of other artists, he founded the A7MA Gallery in Vila Madalena, where he has curated over 70 exhibitions, providing artists with opportunities to showcase and sell their art. During his recent NYC residency, Enivo created a body of new work, Eyes of the Street.  “In the art studio, I combine my street and academic knowledge, mixing graffiti materials with oil paint,” he explains. Featured above is the artist posed next to his recent oil painting, Jacaré — fashioned with oil, spray paint and pastel on c

FIRE AT WILL: FEYM

Image
Name: Feym Crew: Wn1 (hip hop female crew) & Calavers. City-country: San Luis de Potosí, Mexico. Active since: first illegal throw ups in 2004. First piece: I started painting in 2004 with illegal graffiti, it was something very experimental that I did not like because the colors were very similar to those of the fence, and my first legal piece was in 2009 in an event in the city of Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas. It was the first time I left my city to do graffiti, in an 18 hour road trip. It was worth it, I met a lot of female talent in the south of my country and made friendships that are still valid today. Favorite piece: My favorite piece was at the Callegenera festival in 2018 in the city of Monterrey. The festival was transcendent because I met Martha Cooper and I am proud to belong to her photographic archive. In that same festival I did a photo shoot for Nika Kramer from Germany. These two important characters in the history of Hip Hop, were a very satisfying rewa

“Landmark” Continues at One Art Space Through 1/29 with: Peter Paid, Bluster One, Charlie Doves, Jeff Henriquez & Danny Cortes

Image
Curated by Kate Storch , “Landmark” is both aesthetically stirring and culturally enriching. Featuring artworks in a range of media by Joe Conzo , Charlie Doves , Bluster One , Peter Paid , Jeff Henriquez and Danny Cortes , the exhibition continues through this Sunday, January 29 at One Art Space in Tribeca. While visiting yesterday afternoon, I had the opportunity to pose a few questions to Kate. This exhibition is a wonderful homage to hip-hop and to its iconic locations. What spurred you to curate it? I’d been wanting to curate an exhibition on this theme for awhile. And the beginning of 2023, the year that celebrates the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, seemed like the ideal time to make it happen. How did you decide which artists to feature? I chose artists whom I admire as professionals and as people. They are all different, yet all are related to the culture in their own distinct ways. Joe Conzo photographed hip-hop from its early days in the South Bronx. His contributions

5 WAYS TO USE THE MTN HEADLAMP THAT YOU HADN’T THOUGHT OF

Image
Our brothers from SprayPlanet took the initiative to launch the MTN Headlamp , a headlamp that is of great help for those situations in which extra lighting is needed. Because it is a product that may be of interest outside the U.S. we have also decided to launch it from the headquarters in Barcelona. You may think that this is a completely expendable gadget, but this tool offers a solution for many problems beyond strictly painting. AN UNDERVALUED ACCESSORY Why didn't I bring a headlamp with me? This phrase has crossed the mind of every writer running through a tunnel, going down a vent ladder with his hands full, or looking for fallen mouthpieces from a broken bag in the middle of a field. How is it possible that such a useful tool is so seldom used? Surely it is due to the stress caused by the question that this need creates: Which one do I buy? THE QUALITATIVE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MTN HEADLAMP Although all headlamps are, to inexperienced eyes, all the same, pricing (wh

DIRTY HANDZ: A THROWBACK TO THE SAGA WITH DJ PONE

Image
On January 26th, Barcelona’s Shimmy Gallery will be serving up an experience like no other featuring the famous Parisian musician, Dj Pone ; a retrospective of the legendary graffiti video saga Dirty Handz to the beat of Pone’s musical selection alongside the unmistakable audiovisual accompaniment. Montana Colors is proud to be sponsoring this nostalgic initiative, both in the promotion of the event as well as with some other surprises. If the name Dirty Handz doesn't ring a bell, it could be for two reasons: either you're too young, or you live far away from Europe. This trilogy is actually one of the most important audiovisual graffiti documents of the new millennium. Why? Keep reading and we’ll explain… THE AUDIOVISUAL REVOLUTION In the ’90s, the audiovisual universe of self-made VHS films about graffiti started to take shape in Europe. The popularity of home video cameras begian to spark interest in this type of documentation, as it did in other urban disciplines su
