Waterford Walls, Ireland’s Largest Street Art Festival, Celebrates Its Eighth Year with: Zabu, Juliette Viode, Andrii Palval, Half Studio, Sophie Mess, Graffmatt, Mister Copy, Iena Cruz & More

Image
Since 2014, Waterford Walls , Ireland’s largest street art festival, has been transforming and regenerating urban spaces in Waterford, Ireland’s oldest city, while inspiring and connecting communities. Earlier this month, Waterford Walls  held its eighth street art festival with over 28 national and international artists creating huge murals across Waterford City and the surrounding areas. The enchanting mural featured above was painted by the London-based French street artist Zebu with the Dublin-based French illustrator and muralist Juliette Viode . They are both captured here — posing with a local boy —  by travel and street photographer Karin du Maire aka Street Art Nomad.   Several more images from the recent Waterford Walls follow: Ukrainian  artist Andrii Palval with one of the murals from the triptych “The Birds” Portugal-based Emanuel Barreira aka Half Studio in front of his masterly lettering England-based self-taught artist Sophie Mess at work on her stunning mur

THE GRAFFITI EGO IS NOT MY THING! | AN INTERVIEW WITH LEDANIA

Image
Ledania is an artist for our times. Her tag comes from her username of a social network from the 2000s called LatinChat. She’s mastered aerosol techniques and is as comfortable tagging in the street as she is painting huge commissions for Disney. She is a proud Latin woman who supports the LGBT community openly. She has his own cultural space in BogotĂĄ, and manages all her work without an agent, manager or assistant. To people unfamiliar with Greek myths, Leda was a princess who became a Spartan queen, famous for her beautiful black hair and perfect skin. Ledania combines the spirit of this figure with her own personality to create an urban artist with global repercussion. After having the opportunity to meet Ledania personally in Barcelona, MTN World called up the artist once she was back in BogotĂĄ. Most people won’t be aware that you come from the world of graffiti, letters and bombing. Was moving from letters to murals a gradual process for you? In fact, my dad painted mural

MTN PLAYLIST: MONTANA SHOP SÃO PAULO

Image
The Montana Shop SĂŁo Paulo is the underground stop for graff supplies in the world capital of Pixação. Located in the heart of the old town, the store was first opened back in 2006 by a small group of dedicated train writers from the city.
The shop has recently enjoyed a well-earned facelift and is looking as fresh as ever, as you can see in these pictures. To coincide, we thought it was only right that the squad from SP put together a playlist for our Spotify channel. They didn’t disappoint. The playlist is the soundtrack to an afternoon at the SĂŁo Paulo flagship location, opening with Houston rapper Maxo Kream, switching sides of the Atlantic with Skepta and IAMDDB before schooling us on modern Brazilian hype from artists like Febem and Sono TWS. For anyone looking for traditional Brazilian sounds, there’s classic samba and rock too, represented by artists like Cartola and Tim Maia. Listen to the list here: Follow the Montana Colors Spotify page to stay up to date with t

Image
In this fourth post of our new series , PUSHING IT FORWARD — featuring ILLicit creatives claiming space on NYC streets — our focus now is on the streets of Staten Island. Widely overlooked by graffiti and street art aficionados, the blocks on and off Bay Street in Stapleton host an infectious range of both sanctioned and unsanctioned images fashioned by local artists and by those from neighboring boroughs. Featured above are the markings of the prolific  Pöe . Several more photos of ILLicit public works recently captured in Staten Island follow: Coe, KGB Dechead Par, NS Over Rik, Viloe and Osi Poke Post and photos by the  Pushing It Forward Collective by lois via Street Art NYC from Graffiti Bremen und Mehr ! Graffiti Interview: Tizer

Image
Tizer is a British American graffiti artist. Known for his blend of graffiti and character-based street art. Active on the London scene since the late 80’s. He has built a reputation as one of the most prolific and versatile artists around. His artworks are constantly evolving and developing. As an artist,  Tizer  only began to take an interest in graffiti after moving to the UK as a child. Originally from Omaha in Nebraska. It’s still possible to catch some hint of the accent. Starting out with tags, he developed his style through throw-ups and character-based art before focusing on letters. His work now is some of the most recognizable in the London scene. OUTSIGHT, a Jorge RodrĂguez-Gerada mural in Laon, France

Image
Interrupting the status quo is something we associate with Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada . From “culture jamming,” where he employed marketing strategies to call attention to the detrimental social impact of targeted advertising or the “Identity Series,” where he utilized random locals in massive charcoal drawings, he is using art as resistance. The same is true of his current “Outsight” project in Laon , France . The mural covers the side of a residential building and depicts a young boy with gently sloping symmetrical lines across his face. He’s not looking directly at the viewer, but rather looking blankly into space, but seems deeply impacted. There are, what appear to be, melting stripes of paint off of his right side, like there’s a part of him not fully formed and yet is already falling apart. There’s a single tear about to fall, but he’s stoic, like a child of war. Notably, replacing the boy’s iris is a “play” button symbol. Gerarda invites us to question the effects of children vie
